Arizona Cardinal Camp Observations..

Don’t you just love the emotional roller coaster that goes with being an NFL fan, March you begin to suffer football withdrawal. April you’re getting pumped up for the NFL Draft. June you dip back down muttering 82 more days until Training Camps this carries over into July until Aug when you begin a steep ascent as you start receiving notices from your Fantasy football leagues letting you know it’s time to set draft dates and times. training camps are in full swing and now your just waiting with heightened  anticipations for that first game action, you turn on the Hall of Fame Game, watch five minutes and say; This sucks!

Well it seems the end of the Warner era did not sway the sudden populous to disperse. If not for the rain that forced the scrimmage indoors to the Walk-Up Sky Dome I would not have been able to get even a glimpse of the top of a player’s helmet. Fitting an estimated Eleven-Thousand people around a practice field would have been, not enjoyable! It did work out for the better, the crowed was impressive to see for what was just a practice and the crazy thing about it was there were more people there then there would be at Sun Devil Stadium on an actual Game day.

I was seated at the North End-Zone and they were doing all the work at the South End-Zone. After about 15 minutes I had to roll up my roster into a cone so I could be heard; ‘Hey Coach, Can we get some action on this side of the field’ This was really cool, not two minutes later the team switch sides of the field, not sure if it was my vocalization or not, but I  still received  numerous high fives from others seated around me for the timing and to show there appreciation, the crowd fired up with chants of DEFENSE on the goal-line drills, The D was enjoying the support, Haggans was especially all jacked up fist pumping the crowd along with a few other odd gestures of enthusiasm. As of today I see the Defense is still getting the best of the offense in practices.

I still have a concern at the QB position. Now when Warner first came onto the seen Leinart was the starter going into camp watching the various drills it was obvious that Kurt was the man, His accuracy was pin point, from the Bucket drop to the flag drill, 7 on 7’s and 11 on 11’s Warner was just dialed all through camp we just knew he could not be number two for long especially after Leinarts debacle Aug 24, 2008 when he completed one more pass to his receivers then he did to the Raiders Defense, 4 of 12 24 yards and  3 INT’s, classic!

Honestly, what good is pass protection if the QB can’t hit his target in non-contact drills or controlled action?  The one upside is a very talented group of wide receivers that can and have made the QB look good, I’m really impressed with Stephen Williams, and I’m still not sure how this kid went undrafted?  It may not be this year but its name to remember. If you figure other teams send out spy/scouts to observe talent on teams that will be a tough squad to make, such as WR for the Cards, they definitely have taken note of #14.   At this point; I believe this team will need a very solid run game and a stifling defense if they wish to defend the NFC West title.
